Meditation: Ancient Wisdom Evolved into a Modern Practice

Long gone are the days when meditation was considered some weird new age thing, rather suitable to crazy yogis somewhere in Asia. This wonderful tool has become a staple for busy people all over the world.

Meditation is a journey inward that lets you ground yourself against the pressures of fast-paced modern life, fight anxiety,  and find peace and silence within. This simple yet powerful practice has been around for thousands of years, and if you haven’t given it a try, you’re missing out.

What is Meditation, Exactly?

Meditation is the practice of focusing the mind. It’s about being present, fully and completely. It involves sitting quietly, breathing deeply, and letting go of all thoughts. While it’s not always easy to empty the mind, everyone can find clarity within it.

How to Start Meditating

Starting to meditate is easy. All you need is a quiet space and a few minutes.

  1. Find a Quiet Spot: Choose a place where you won’t be disturbed. It can be a corner of your room or a spot in your garden.
  2. Sit Comfortably: You don’t need to sit cross-legged on the floor unless you want to. Sit in a chair if that’s more comfortable. Keep your back straight and your hands on your knees or in your lap.
  3. Close Your Eyes: This helps you focus inward.
  4. Breathe Deeply: Take slow, deep breaths. Inhale through your nose, let your belly fill with air, and then exhale slowly.
  5. Find Your Focus: Now, you need to focus on something. The easiest approach is to focus on your breath –  pay attention to each breath. Feel the air entering your nostrils, filling your lungs, and leaving your body. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your breath.

Other points of focus can be sounds, an object in front of you, or flame of a candle. There are various popular “body scan” meditations, where you focus your attention on various parts of your body.

If You’re a Beginner, Try Guided Meditation Apps

There is a variety of guided meditations available online. That way, you can be told exactly what to do, what to focus on, and be reminded to bring your focus back when your mind wonders. You may have heard about popular apps, such as Calm, Breethe, Headspace, and many more. They aren’t a perfect choice for everyone, and many people choose to go at their own pace, however, if you are a beginner, you may want to give guided meditation a try (those apps usually come with free trial!).
