Why I Started Running at 52: A Journey to Reclaim My Life

A couple of years ago, my life took an unexpected turn when my husband left me for a younger woman. Saying that it was tough would be a huge understatement, and I found myself at a crossroads, questioning my self-worth and the direction my life was heading. I realized I needed a change—not just to lose weight, but to reclaim my sense of self and find joy again. That’s when I decided to start running.

Feeling the Weight of Age

As I approached my early 50s, I began to feel the creeping effects of age. Menopause brought with it unwelcome weight gain, joint pain, and a general feeling of heaviness. I was no longer the sprightly woman I once was, and it was taking a toll on my mental and physical well-being. I knew I needed a consistent fitness routine to help me lose weight and maintain my health as I got older.

A History of On-and-Off Workouts

In my younger years, I worked out sporadically and was fortunate to maintain a healthy weight thanks to good genes. But as the years went by, I realized that I couldn’t rely on genetics alone. I needed a solid fitness routine to stay healthy and active. I always admired runners—those confident individuals who seemed to glide effortlessly through the park—but I had never managed to stick with running myself.

The Desire for Mental Clarity and Endorphins

Beyond the physical benefits, I was also seeking mental clarity and the infamous runner’s high. The endorphins released during a good run promised a natural mood boost and a clearer mind. I yearned for that sense of euphoria, to feel light and active again, and to keep up with my grandkids without feeling like the “old grandma.”

Taking the First Step

Deciding to start running was a daunting prospect. I had no idea where to begin and was worried about potential injuries given my age and joint pain. That’s when I discovered Joggo, a running app designed to help beginners like me ease into the world of running. I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it—I just wanted something to guide me through the process gently.

Building a New Lifestyle

Starting slow was key. Joggo provided a personalized plan that gradually increased my running time and intensity, allowing my body to adapt without overwhelming it. The app’s reminders and flexible scheduling options helped me incorporate running into my daily routine, making it a non-negotiable part of my life.  If you’re interested to learn more about my experience with Joggo, I have written a separate piece here.

The Joy of Progress

The first few runs were challenging, but I quickly began to notice improvements. I felt lighter, not just in weight but in spirit. Running became my therapy, a way to clear my mind and reset my mood. The sense of accomplishment I felt after each run was incredibly rewarding.

Rediscovering Myself

Running has given me more than just physical fitness. It’s helped me rebuild my confidence and sense of self-worth. I no longer feel like a victim of circumstances but rather someone who takes control of her life. I can keep up with my grandkids, enjoy the endorphin rush, and feel proud of the progress I’ve made.

Looking Ahead

Now, at 52, I’ve developed a fitness routine that I’m confident will keep me healthy and active as I age. Running has become a cornerstone of my lifestyle, something I look forward to every day. It’s my way of staying young at heart and proving to myself that it’s never too late to start something new. I have recently signed up for my first 10K race and hope to run a full marathon by the time I’m 60!

If you’re feeling the weight of age and life’s challenges, I encourage you to take that first step. Whether it’s running or another form of exercise, find what makes you feel alive and stick with it. The journey may be tough, but the rewards are beyond worth it.
